Gene Michieli
My work tends to be based on forms found in the natural world as interpreted through my own imagination. If pushed into a definition of what I do I would have to call myself more of a classical than a modern artist. This is in the strict academic sense that the classical artist seeks to express their ideas through the manipulation of their materials. Although the medium certainly influences my work, it is through the mastery of my tools and materials that my work comes to be. I do a large amount of drawing, concentrating on natural forms and interpreting them into the more abstract pieces. The more successful of the pieces blend the curves and forms found in flowering plants and leaves into a different whole.
I consider a piece to be a success when it stands on its own and commands a visual/spatial presence. Sculpture has its own requirements for space and presentation and must be viable in three dimensions rather than just two. A piece has to be interesting from all sides and still fit together visually with its surroundings. Sculpture interacts with its environment as two dimensional art cannot. This is the challenge I enjoy as a three dimensional artist. Hopefully I have been successful.
One can only hope that the continued success of this will go on and on and blah blah blah...
